First Outdoor Ride of 2011

And hopefully not the last ride of february, 2011. Got out for a 90 min "spin" in the fog and 100% humidity on thursday. It was 41, holy moly, a heat wave. And it was wet. The watery roads have now re-frozen and we have snow in the forecast for this weekend, but in the mean time i am happy, hungry and ready to go out again and climb some hills on the full fendered cross bike. I do think that last winter all the outdoor riding i did helped with glute firing and getting the body ready for runs and of course, outdoor riding in the spring. Sitting on a trainer is fine, but you really do not use your body ( ie core) in the same way you do outside with little and big hils.
So my email to coach reads like this " When the temps decide to hover in the high 20's and 30's and the wind is negligible, you can find me riding in circles up the hills by our house instead of climbing in the basement to Coach Troy going up Lemmon to Windy Pass and Summerhaven."

"You want to quit, but you dont HAVE TO...."
"Comeon, Comeon, dont lose my wheel. Comeon."

Ok that was Troy, not me. IF you dont know Troy he says the above ALOT.

And when in the pool today i had a Phil Ligget-ism as my shoulder was ready to pop:

The elastic has snapped."

Since we are on the subject of riding and i seem to have gotten myself all excited for the TDF which is a mere 6 mos away, here are some other faves:

  • "There's no reason to rush into hell." Commenting on a slow moving Paris-Roubaix Peleton. I think this is more a commentary on the annual LT bike test.

  • And so the first pedal has been turned in Anger...
Oh and here are some photos where i promise you there was no Hell and no Anger:

"hmm maybe i should stop, as i feel a bit like i may drop a glove."

"yup lotsa lotsa ice still on the Miss."

I usually run up this, its about a mile and its got a nice grade from about 2-4%.

Likely the best investment I have made in a good sturdy bike. Full fenders pretty much stay on this baby all year round.

That's all for today.

Oh how NICE that you could go outside!!! I'm so happy for you and hope that made you feel great. I've been so busy lately and very slack on my blog reading. I just caught up a bit with yours. I read your Hit Reset and then kept reading...and thought wait, I just DID write a Keeping it real post! How funny. Now, some of what I wrote wasn't exactly what you were saying however! I can totally relate to what you have been going through.
BIG time. My head is all over the place lately. One minute I am satisfied the next minute I am struggling to figure out how to keep getting faster.
It's HARD!!!
SO hang in there. you are not alone. And, just so you know, You totally inspire me Julia.
(( Your hubby is awesome for being so sweet on Valentine's. :o)))

oh gosh I don't know how you do it. I spend 3 months indoors because "I won't ride outside under 45" seriously. More power to you- you are hardcore.

I love that 41 is a heat wave for you and cold for us, but that we both ride outside in it excitedly :-) HOpe you get more opportunities for February!

Congrats on getting outside. I rode my bike to work yesterday. I dressed like it was 20 degrees. Imagine my surprise as I was pedaling fast, "running late for work" and it was 55 UGH!!!! :)

Only person in Michigan that ever complained about 55 degrees at 4:30 am on a weekday in February.

yes! I got to do the same yesterday. But I had 55 degrees, 30mph wind, and our ice is finally gone! yay!!!

We've had some great weather, too, but I did not make it outside as the roads here are too narrow due to snow! So glad you got out and you are feeling better! I have been thinking about you!

Oh I can't wait for you to show me that hill to run up! But I will never bike outside in those conditions. I'll suck it up if it's in the 60s, but I really want at least the 70s. I may never ride outside again.

Brrrrrr... I must be getting super thin skinned as I age (gracefully)

That ride did not look like fun. I was supposed to go out for a measly 30 minute run today. Nope... too windy with a nasty wind chill factor to boot.

cookies and tea instead. :-)

You can ride for me J, ok?

Funny about TdF as we spent the weekend watching 2010 race. I got the DVDs for Shaun as he was in Afghanistan and missed it. So glad you got some outside riding in.
